Cruise Recap: Athens & Santorini, Greece

In case you missed the previous recaps and want to catch up:

The next few stops on our amazing cruise brought us to Greece!  I wasn’t sure what to expect from Greece considering everything I’ve been hearing in the news recently, but was so excited to find out during our two stops.

Athens, Greece

Our first stop was in Athens, which is the capital city of Greece.  The city itself did not impress me.  It was a little dirtier and seemed more deserted then what I imagined it would be.  The tourist sites, however, were absolutely amazing!

First, our tour took us to the Acropolis.  In order to get there, you have to climb a massive hill overlooking the city.  At the top, there are famous ruins (the most famous being the Parthenon).  Although it was extremely hot and incredibly crowded, the view at the top was well worth it!

Santorini Island, Greece

The next stop was my absolute favorite place to visit, and is quite possibly my most favorite place on earth now.  I should have known I was going to fall in love with it when I woke up bright and early and saw this beautiful sunrise…

After breakfast, we took a quick boat ride to the island of Santorini.  It was GORGEOUS.

I immediately felt a sense of peace and calm as we walked through the village of Oai.  It was so quiet and beautiful, with views unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

The white clay houses with royal blue domed roofs built into the cliffs stole my heart.  I couldn’t get over this adorable little town, and could have spent days exploring this beautiful place.

We spent our time leisurely walking around, taking pictures of the gorgeous view, and eating lunch at a cute little outdoor cafe overlooking the Mediterranean.

Although we only had a short day here, it became one of my most favorite places on earth.  I’m working on convincing Bobby we need to go back for our 5 or 10 year anniversary.  We’ll see how that goes over.  ;)

If you had to choose, what would you say your favorite place on earth is?  I used to say in my hometown at the beach, but Santorini stole the show!  :)

  1. Reading these posts makes me so jealous – but happy that you got to experience these things! Greece is definitely next on my list!

Great post! It gives me great joy to read nice things about Greece from people who visit even fosmall rife period of time. Being Greek & curating content for a thematic travel blog around Greece constitutes my opinion rather biased, however I could not miss the chance and say thanks on your nice post & pictures!

  4. Visiting Santorini is on my bucket list! Now I want to go even more!

  5. All of your pictures look so beautiful! Ever since watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (ha!), Santorini has been on the top of my list of places I want to visit.

I am with you about Santorini! It is beautiful. My husband and I went there for our honeymoon four years ago and stayed in Oia for five days. We hope to go back for our ten year anniversary.

Greece is on my bucket list! Oia reminds me of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants… if you haven’t seen that movie, you should watch it. Such a cute little chick flick. The second one is when they spend the most time in Greece, I think! :)

Looks like such an amazing vacation destination…thanks for sharing pics so someone who’s never been to Greece can see it!

  9. I really really loved the island of Capri, so that would probably be one of my favorite places. I’ve also been to Hawaii, and that was pretty darn amazing! ;)

  10. I want to go to Santorini so badly! ….We’re talking major want- like kid in a candy/toy store want, possibly even more. Wait, I know! Like kid not wanting to principal to call home & never ask for another favor again after an incident at school kind of want.
I got to live out living in a dream location and learned it’s not where you’re at but it is who you’re with. SO, anywhere with the husband or family is a dream for me! :)

  11. I love Santorini. I went there a few years ago, and it’s stunning. I felt the same way about Athens too: dirty, run down, and all the wild dogs. Glad you had a fabulous time.

    • Yes! I was shocked that Santorini and Athens were in the same country… They were so different!

    • Meghan, the hubs & I are getting ready to go in September. Any suggestions?? :)

      • No matter what it will be an amazing trip.
Suggestions: You probaby only need one to two days in Athens tops. People are not very friendly, but the tourist sites really are incredible and worth seeing. If you want to save a few bucks, take the subway. It’s actually very clean (or it was when we went) and easy to use. If you take the subway to the airport, you have to pay a higher fare than usual (I learned the hard way).
In Santorini, book a table at one of the restaurants on the cliff’s edge so you can see the sunset. Definitely worth it. And if you like baklava, you’ll be in heaven. They have it with just about every nut you can think of it, and it’s worth trying a sampler (or a different one every day). The hot springs are fun but only luke warm, and the shopping is great in Santorini. Think cute little artistic shops all packed in small, pretty alleyways. One note; the alleyways are cobblestone and a bit slippery so slightly hard to navigate in flip flops. Honestly no matter what you do, you will have a fantastic time. I’d love to hear all about it when you get back.

      • Oh no were not going to Athens, were only going to Santorini Island :) But thank you so muh for the feedback. I’ve always wanted to go to a hot spring, so that’s definitely something I’d love to do. Of course I’ll let you know how it goes :)
